Notebooks (March 1804)

  1. ‘This looks,’ says Kathleen Coburn [Notebooks 2:1958] ‘like a laundry list’, although she also notes: ‘at right angles is written, perhaps at a different time, “No! No! Yes! Yes!”

Coburn does not seem to have noticed that the first bit of this is Coleridge jotting something down from Browne’s Pseudodoxia Epidemica (a book we know he favoured): ‘in diffused and open aspects, men hollow their hand above their eye, and make an artificial brow, whereby they direct the dispersed rays of sight, and by this shade preserve a moderate light in the chamber of the eye.’ [Browne 3:4 ‘The Garden of Cyrus’]
